      <image:title>The Light Study - Slide Viewing</image:title>
<image:caption>Torey Erin and Seth Dahlseid created an installation of several 35mm slide projection images, sourced from the Minnesota Historical Society, family basements, institutional archives, and thrift stores. The images displayed show people engaged in everyday life, creating new narratives in an exploration of analog viewing. Visitors are welcome to bring their own 35mm slides to view. During their Hinge Artist Residency, Dahlseid and Erin are focusing on the fundamentals and importance of light. A slide projector is created by using the concepts of refraction, focal point and focal length, and observation of how light passes through lenses. These physical concepts bring us the experience of photography and the projected image.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A camera obscura, is a Latin term meaning dark room, which has the ability to project the surrounding exterior landscape to the inside walls with the aid of a lens. Dahlseid and Erin present Roland, the camera obscura, a portable light tight room with a lens facing north in view of the Kirkbride tower. Visitors were welcome to step inside of the camera obscura to learn about and experience the phenomenon of light, the human eye, and the history and mechanism of the camera.</image:caption>

<image:title>In/Sight: part of Open Water (A Floating Happening) - Open Water Project MN</image:title>
<image:caption>Open Water Project MN is a series of bouyant happenings aboard the Minneapolis Water Taxi curated by artist and cruise director Alyssa Baguss. Each one hour river journey will be hosted by a different Minneapolis culture maker who will creatively engage passengers through the floating arts. Torey Erin hosted artists Paula McCartney, Sarah Sampedro, Seth Dahslseid, Alyssa Baguss, and Peng Wu on September 18th, 2019 at Dusk for In//Sight. In//Sight is a playful engagement with the invisible. Erin invited artists to participate in creating a camera-less photograph placed in a light tight envelope, which they brought to the riverboat. As the artists float upstream, they verbally described what they picture their photograph to be, communicating a net yet developed manifestation of the invisible. As they describe their perspective and experience with light/dark, they create a record of the in between - a poetic and playful relationship to the creative mind and place. The descriptions create new imagery, examining and extending the phenomemon of invisible realities. <image:title>Field Experience #12: Impermanence II - About Impermanence II</image:title>
<image:caption>In the summer of 2020, Julka Almquist, Peng Wu and Torey Erin met virtually to collaborate on Field Experience #12, Impermanence II as a response to the global pandemic. The event was an asynchronous global activity mailed to participants, based on the practice of making an ephemeral arrangement and exploring the natural landscape. Meditations on light, trees, sand, trash, and plants were integrated into the event. Participants made an arrangement and mapped their coordinates for others to find. It was incredible to see how people incorporated meaning ranging from acknowledging tragic losses of Breanna Taylor, RBG, and a death that was witnessed this summer; to subverting guards at Tiananmen Square; to collaborations with seasons; and to interspecies collaborations with squirrels. If you are interested you can see the map HERE. <image:title>Installation + Film - Salix</image:title>
<image:caption>Salix is a multi-media exhibition featuring a 16mm film poem and zine about the cultural memory, medicine, biology, and modalities of a willow tree. Salix was installed at Mirrorlab (3400 Cedar Ave S, Mpls, MN) and the 16mm film poem was projected directly onto the windows for pedestrians, bikers, and folks driving by to see during the pandemic in March, 2021-April 2021 starting at sundown. The sound emitted from the speakers installed outdoors featuring music by Geoffrey Lamar Wilson. The free zine included images and content by Torey Erin, designed and risograph printed by Ian Babineau with invitation by Miriam Karraker. Special thanks to SmartSet, Mirrorlab, Seth Dahlseid, and the Minnesota State Arts Board for their support with this project. Torey Erin is a fiscal year 2020 Artist Initiative grant recipient from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Installation + Film</image:title>
<image:caption>Creating space for play and connection has been an important theme in my recent projects, including Field Experience 6: Impermanence, led by myself and artist Peng Wu as part of Field Experience by Julka Almquist. We met with a group of people in a local park, where we talked about impermanence before we did a quiet activity of exploring and collecting wild plants to create temporary fragrant sculptures. We left the arrangements for strangers to enjoy, and closed the event with a sunset practice, watching the sun go down in silence and letting go of what we have created and anything else we were carrying with us that we wanted to shed. The meditation of playing, collaboration, quiet, and connection to the plants and sun was a simply and deeply meaningful experience for participants. I found after the event that one of the participants brought her late husbands ashes to the event, and had an etheral and emotional experience of letting go.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Installation + Film</image:title>
<image:caption>On July 3 2020 Torey witnessed a search and rescue for a 9 year old boy in the Saint Croix River. It was a tragic afternoon, and the boy did not survive the river. Torey has gone back to the site, thinking about memorializing the event that happened on the land with a series of happenings that relate to the impermanence of reality. Finding broken pieces of ice along the shores of the river where the boy was found, she began to sculpt ice in the sand. People walking by started to help her, without knowing the ‘why’ and the project unfolded into a community event all ages of people helping to make this sculpture than was slowly melting in the sun. Torey’s practice aims to emphasize an emotional connection to the landscape that we call Earth. She watched the ice melt in the sun and pieces drift back into the river.</image:caption>
